PhD project MATXTOM

The MATXTOM project aims to develop an in vivo 3D imaging platform capable of assessing bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT), bone, and vascularization on a standard laboratory device. BMAT plays a crucial role in bone metabolism, osteoporosis, and metabolic disorders. However, its biology remains poorly understood, primarily due to a lack of suitable imaging tools. Existing imaging techniques, such as standard X-rays, require animal sacrifice and provide insufficient contrast for visualizing BMAT. Furthermore, the use of toxic compounds for this visualization presents safety risks and hinders longitudinal studies. MATXTOM will overcome these limitations by proposing an innovative approach based on Phase Contrast Imaging (PCI), which will be adapted to a micro-computed tomograph for in vivo imaging. The objective is to enable the simultaneous assessment and monitoring of all three bone tissues.
